Electrospinning of small diameter vascular grafts

Electrospinning permits fabrication of scaffolds out of synthetic and natural polymers that mimic the structure of the extra cellular matrix. Within this technique fibres in the nanometer range are formed by subjecting a polymer solution to a high electrical field. The porous design of such scaffolds is a promising way to enhance biocompatibility.

Electrospinning setup
Electrospun Prostheses with an inner diameter of 2 mm

By varying parameters like the distance between the electrodes mechanical behaviour of the electrospun scaffolds can be adjusted to be comparable to the native tissue. Degradable and non degradable Polymers are investigated.

Varying parameter results in different morphologies
