Specialities:
Academic Rewards
He studied Electronics and Control Engineering at the Technical University, Vienna and graduated in 1981. In 1981 he joined the Boltzmann-Institute of Traumatology and received the PhD with Distinction in 1985.
He joined the Artificial Heart Team in the University of Vienna in 1985 and the Boltzmann-Institute of Cardiac Research. In 1986 he was technical supervisor at the first clinical implants of the Vienna Artificial Heart. In the following he focussed on rotary blood pumps, working on indices and numerical simulation of blood trauma, in-vitro simulation of thrombotic risk, and monitoring and control of these pumps.
In 1993 he received his habilitation for Biomedical Engineering. He was involved into the first implants of long term rotary pumps in 1998 and led the development and first clinical study of physiological responsive control of these pumps.
Further research interests and activities include the development of vascular grafts, of blood purification systems and pump components, the diagnostics of cardiovascular ultrasound, tissue biomechanics and bioreactors.
Schima has yet published more than 130 reviewed papers, over 350 abstracts and congress contributions, and more than 10 national and international patents. The work was awarded with the Austrian State award for reduction of animal experiments, and several awards of International and National societies.
Schima leads the Working Group on Cardiovascular Dynamics and is the coordinator of a Doctoral Study on Biomedical Engineering at the MUW, and in the board of the Ludwig-Boltzmann-Cluster for Cardiovascular Research. Further he has been teaching in University, University of Applied Sciences, Medica Academies and Engineering Schools.
In 1988 the group organized a Workshop on Rotary Blood Pumps, which became the forerunner of the ISRBP. Schima has been board member of several national and international societies (ESAO, ISRBP, ISAO, IFAO, OeGBMT), past president of the ISRBP and is currently President elect of the European Society for Artificial Organs (ESAO).
